Gibson Collection #269

Hessian Hirschfanger Ca. 1830-1850

First Published on the Bayonet Connection July 13, 1997

This is a brass handled hirschfanger with a twin lug type attachment mechanism. This shape of handle is typical of Hessia. The brass shield guard has a three leaf motif in German silver. The scabbard is leather with brass fittings. The blade is single edged with a false edge extending 150 mm back from the tip. This is not a model that I have found published anywhere and I really do not have much information about it. I would love to hear from you if you have a similar item. Also if anyone knows the significance of the three leaf motif, please let me know.

The dimensions are as follows: Overall length 707 mm; Blade length 573; Blade width 34.5; Blade thickness 7.5; Handle length 134.
