For this update I am posting photos of six interesting Germanic Hirschfangers from my collection. The German term Hirschfanger loosely translates as deer slayer in English. The Germans use this word to indicate a wide array of hunting and military swords and some bayonets. Here I am concentrating only on bayonets. They all have a side latch attachment mechanism. Fitting on either a long bar or two short bars on the right side of the rifle. These rifles are usually full stocked up to the muzzle. For military use these bayonets were issued only elite rifle squads. Your standard soldier would be armed with a musket and socket bayonet in this same era. These bayonets were also used by private shooting clubs and as hunting weapons.
